Abstract

This study was to investigate how mindfulness meditation breathing exercises affected the tone and stiffness of both the upper trapezius and the sternocleidomastoid muscle groups on participants with forward head posture. Twenty participants (10 males and 10 females) with forward head posture took part in this study. A MyotonPRO (Myoton AS, Tallinn, Estonia) was used to measure the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscle groups for tone and stiffness. For intervention, the participants relaxed and breathed in deeply for 10 minutes. During these mindfulness meditation breathing exercises, the participants counted ten times to focus their consciousness. For statistical analysis, a paired t-test was used to compare between pre- and post-intervention. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: Post-intervention data showed significant improvement in the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscle tone (p<0.05), and the upper trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscle stiffness (p<0.05). We confirmed that muscle tone and stiffness improved as a result of mindfulness meditation breathing exercises. These findings suggest that mindfulness meditation breathing exercises can be employed as a simple and widely applicable therapeutic intervention to improve forward head posture.
